Shortly after passing the licensure exam for patent attorneys, Takayuki Takamatsu first joined an IP law firm for a few years, and then worked for the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), one of the largest public research organizations in Japan engaged in the creation and application of useful technologies in life science and biotechnology, materials and chemistry, electronics and manufacturing, energy and the environment, among others. As Technology Licensing Manager at AIST, Takamatsu directly participated and managed negotiations for patent licensing. Takamatsu’s stint at AIST also enabled him to acquire extensive experience in patent prosecution and litigation in the fields of materials science, chemistry, mechanical engineering, software and computer systems.

Mr. Takamatsu co-founded Branche International Intellectual Property Law Firm in March 2015 with Tokuko Suzuki.

【Achievements】

2018

Takamatsu was invited to lecture at the Yamanashi Gakuin University on the theme “Fundamentals on Copyrights in the Digital Age”.

Takamatsu delivered a lecture on the theme「Intellectual Property on site of technological development」on two separate occasions at a seminar at Tokushima University.

Upon the invitation of the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Takamatsu shared his expertise by delivering a lecture on the practical use of block chain technology as a method of copyright management.

2017

Takayuki Takamatsu’s ”A Study of The Relationship Between Registered Varieties and the Scope of Nurturing Rights Available under the Plant Variety Protection and Seed Act”, a contributory paper in Morgenrot, a collection of commemorative essays in honor of Professor Kazushi Doi, was published by Chuo Keizai, Inc. in 2017.

Mr. Takamatsu regularly writes a column on “Intellectual Property strategy for the Division of Administration” published in the Monthly Soumu Online.

He has also delivered a lecture on intellectual property law fundamentals and application before the Ichikawa Lions Club.

2016

In 2016, Mr.Takamatsu delivered a lecture on “The Utilization of Intellectual Property in the business of licensing” at Yamanashi Gakuin University.

In the same year, at a seminar sponsored by Johokiko Co., Ltd., Mr. Takamatsu lectured on “The System of Protecting Geographical Indications for first-time learners”. He was also invited as a speaker in the seminar financed by the same company on “Basic Knowledge Required for Negotiating and Operating Contracts Relating to Know-how and Licenses.”

In addition, Mr. Takamatsu also achieved the distinction of being the first patent attorney in Japan to successfully register a geographical indication before the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. “IYO Raw Silk” of Ehime prefecture was extensively featured on television and in newspaper articles as the first registration of a geographical indication of a non-edible, agricultural, forestry and fishery product.

Further, Mr.Takamatsu participated as a lecturer in the seminar sponsored by The Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry on “Branding vis-a-vis Intellectual Property Rights”.

It was in 2016 when Mr. Takamatsu began writing a column on “Intellectual Property strategy for the Division of Administration” for the Monthly Soumu Online.

2014

In 2014, Mr. Takamatsu took part as a lecturer in “A Must-See for Designers: Pointers in Contract Price Negotiation”, a seminar on copyright protection held in Kanda, Tokyo, and in another gathering, a project commissioned by The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Mr. Takamatsu shared his perspective on intellectual property law and practice in the symposium “Frontiers of Innovative Research in Science and Technology” held under the auspices of Konan University.
